One of the most beautiful things about homeschooling my boys is being around to see the milestones as they happen, the big and the small, and to see first hand how pleased they are with their own achievements. It’s quite magical. We’ve had a couple in the last few days that I wanted to share.
We were hanging out in the playground a few days ago with what we laughingly call our Port Douglas Homeschool Group, there are only 2 of us and 4 kids. Port Douglas is a very small town.
It’s a lovely little playground, right behind the beach, you can see the sea through the trees, hear the waves breaking on our tropical shore and enjoy the breeze and the shade of a palm tree. My friend’s little girl was sitting, engrossed in drawing flowers and love hearts, little girls are cute like that.
The boys were running about, wrestling and tumbling like a couple of over excited puppies and catching praying mantis at the praying mantis tree, that’s what boys do. Boo, 5, liked the look of this drawing thing and came to join us at the table, he produced some lovely hearts and flowers, not something he’s ever done before, he’s a real boy’s boy. He has been drawing more and more for the last couple of days using the most beautiful colours and symmetrical patterns to fill them in . On day one he asked me how to spell love and put it in his picture along with a couple of other words. Yesterday, at the beach, he wrote in the sand ” I love Mum”. Now, if you count that as a sentence, it’s his first one and the best possible one to cut your teeth on. I didn’t have my camera as the stupid thing has gone off to be repaired .
Later the same day he checked his email, both the boys have their own email accounts, helps them learn. He had a little message from his Dad which he read with no problems, he then decided to reply, all by himself, first time, and managed to write ” Hi Dad how are you? are you good in work? Love Boo” The only word he needed help to spell was work. Come on, it’s hard!
So writing and typing and drawing for pleasure seem to have started this week, from here it will just get bigger and better, I’m looking forward to his next masterpiece.
