Cattana Wetlands Cairns. Cairns Homeschool Group

This week Cairns Homeschool Group’s outing to The Cattana Wetlands taught us all a lot about wetland habitats, native flora, it’s uses and the amount of work involved in reclaiming these former sand mine sites as a natural reserve. We had a passionate and knowledgeable guide who freely gave up her time to teach us something about our local environment.

The mixed age group enjoyed exploring the Cattana Wetlands walkways. All of the board walks are made from recycled milk bottles.

Informative signs are dotted around the Cattana Wetlands. Don’t get too close to the edge, this is salt water crocodile territory.

Baby cane toads are safe for birds and snakes to eat, they haven’t developed poison sacks yet.

The lakes contain introduced tilapia, the fish are being removed as they are exterminating native species. The fish are then used to fertilise the plants

Wild loofah vine. The lookfahs can be used for scrubbing washing up or can be put in the washing machine with clothes.

A praying mantis. Vicious predators, they are on the Deadly 60.

Acid sulphate soils are making the water very sulphuric. The rangers use lime to neutralise the problem.

How to tell if a plant is a fig or not. Fig leaf buds are rather phallic.
